K-drama industry asks Seoul for a $746 million rescue fund
Twelve industry groups warn Korea's TV drama production base is at risk as output falls from 141 titles in 2022 to about 115 in 2025.

The brief
- ■Industry groups want a 1 trillion won government investment fund
- ■K-drama output has fallen roughly 18% since 2022
- ■The genre remains one of Korea's biggest global cultural exports
Why it matters
K-dramas are a global soft-power engine for South Korea — a production slump threatens both an industry and a national brand.
Twelve South Korean industry groups warned on Wednesday that the country's television drama production base is at risk, calling on the government to set up a 1 trillion won ($746 million) investment fund.
K-dramas have been hugely popular worldwide, but the number produced has fallen from 141 titles in 2022 to about 115 in 2025, according to research by Korea IR Service.
The groups argue that without support, rising costs and platform consolidation will hollow out the industry behind one of Korea's most successful exports.
