OpenAI rolls out faster image model that also makes GIFs
Images 2.6 is 50% faster, generates animated GIFs, and is live in ChatGPT, Codex and the API.

The brief
- ■Generates images 50% faster than the previous version
- ■Creates GIFs with adjustable speed and editable frames
- ■Available globally in ChatGPT and Codex, with API access
Why it matters
Cheaper, faster image generation pushes AI visuals into everyday tools — and makes spotting fakes even harder.
OpenAI is rolling out its Images 2.6 model globally in ChatGPT and Codex. The company says it generates images 50% faster than the previous iteration and can also create animated GIFs, whose speed users can adjust frame by frame.
Two API variants, Flare and Sunburst, are available for developers. The launch lands the same week Meta bought the AI coding startup Conductor and OpenAI announced plans to acquire developer-tools company Pierre Computer.
The flurry of deals and releases shows the AI race shifting from raw model power to the tools people actually work in.
