Meta buys Conductor as OpenAI moves on Pierre: the AI coding land grab
Both AI giants spent the week buying startups that help machines write software.

The brief
- ■Meta acquired AI coding startup Conductor
- ■OpenAI announced plans to acquire developer-tools firm Pierre Computer
- ■OpenAI's agents also found 948 Linux security vulnerabilities in a $1.2M experiment
Why it matters
Whoever owns the tools that write code shapes the entire software industry — and the race just got expensive.
Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup, days after OpenAI announced plans to buy Pierre Computer, whose code-navigation technology already powers parts of Codex. Axios reported the Pierre deal advances OpenAI's ambition to challenge GitHub.
The deals underline where the AI race is heading: autonomous agents that do real software work. OpenAI also disclosed that its agents found 948 security vulnerabilities in Linux in an experiment costing roughly $1.2 million.
Meanwhile Tencent launched the full version of its 770-billion-parameter Hy4 model, with vision and computer-use abilities aimed at operating everyday software — a sign the agent race is global.
